A highlight of our favorite LGBTQ+ designers' most stunning spaces.
This Pride Month, we at Signature Hardware have a lot to celebrate. Throughout the years, we have gained inspiration from dozens of LGBTQIA+ community members and have had the pleasure of working directly with many of them. This June, we want to highlight some of our favorites. But first, we feel it is important to recognize Pride’s historical significance and how it relates to our festivities today:
A commemoration of the Stonewall riots—a 1969 kingpin protest that catapulted the modern gay rights movement into the mainstream—Pride is known for being an event where LGBTQIA+ people from all over the world rejoice in their identity and continue the ongoing fight for equality.
Thanks to the brave actions of many, we are now able to celebrate representation, visibility, and acceptance for LGBTQIA+ builders, designers, and everyday renovators. Without further ado, here are some of our favorite spaces.
Actors Kit Williamson and John Halbach are consistently bringing LGBTQ+ representation to Hollywood. Created, produced, and starring Kit, “EastSiders” is a 16-time Daytime-Emmy-nominated LGBT dark comedy that also features John in a key role. With subplots that delve into things like substance abuse and infidelity, this Netflix series has captured the eyes and ears of many. In addition to their work on “EastSiders,” Kit and John have made respective appearances on shows such as “Mad Men” and “Wallflowers.”
Since the “EastSiders” final season in 2019, the married couple has shifted their focus to other projects, including their new home in Joshua Tree. Dubbed the “El Dorado Oasis” this stunning 1958 homestead shares land with their cat, Albee, and a vintage Shasta trailer named Dolly.
"I think Pride is about community. It’s about bringing everybody together under one banner for the common good and lifting each other up."
-Kit & John
Kit and John began renovating their home in February 2021, with the aim to create a desert retreat that is bursting with eye-catching color and impressive outdoor spaces. After all, with five acres to work with, the pair needed to take advantage of their stunning surroundings.
Throughout the house, Southwestern-inspired murals and tile represent their personal styles, all while adding a fun, unique touch that feels natural to the area. Additionally, commanding fixtures act as the centerpieces of their outdoor bathroom, creating a motif that feels seclusive and luxurious.
The Brownstone Boys’ Jordan and Barry always had a passion and appreciation for their classic New York neighborhood. Now, they work to restore historic properties, known as “brownstones,” throughout the city.
The pair met about five years ago, each sharing the dream of buying and renovating a brownstone of their own. After deciding to take the plunge together in 2018, they now hold the keys to a 130-year-old space in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Today, they share their latest projects on their Instagram, YouTube, and blog, all while inspiring others to be themselves.
"We view our community as one of our biggest assets that we draw inspiration from and lean on for support. We hope as we are visible, open, and transparent, we can offer the same inspiration and support for others."
-The Brownstone Boys
While not a true brownstone, the Break And Reno Row House carries similar architecture to Jordan and Barry’s traditional renovations. With more freedom to explore other design styles, the pair opted for a more up-to-date motif.
In this bathroom, the duo carefully chose refreshing, streamlined pieces while making the most of its long and narrow layout. The result is an organic modern oasis, complete with a full wet room. Check out the house tour here.
Matt and Beau of Probably This have been running an LGBTQIA+ and home blog since 2014. After living in a few apartments together and bouncing around the country in a camper named “Rosie,” they decided to settle down in 2020 and find the Victorian home of their dreams. However, this time, they turned to TikTok to share their journey—and the timing could not have been better.
As TikTok began to grow over the quarantine months, so did Matt and Beau’s follower count. Today, they have amassed over 500,000 fans and are now one of the most beloved interior design creators on the app. Full of life and color, their New Orleans escape has become a place where the recently engaged couple can share their love and talent with the new generation.
Since closing in on the late-1800s, double-shotgun house, Matt and Beau have been drafting up big plans. With each renovation they complete, the two highlight the home’s original features and elevate them through vibrant color choices and “Modern Victorian” decor.
For example, this guest bathroom is teeming with classic influence—from the antique furniture to the pedestal sink, the details in this space strike the perfect balance between timeless and unique.
DIY mavericks and lifestyle creators, Deb and Danelle have been flipping houses since 2008—and after over 10 years in the business, they can safely say that they’ve done it all. From siding to installing cabinetry, this fun-loving pair have become role models to not just other queer people in the design community, but young girls as well. Their “can-do attitude,” combined with their resilience and talent, have put them on the map as masters of traditional farmhouse design.
As for their relationship, Danelle and Deb have been a couple for over 20 years. Today, Deb says, “There is nobody else in this world that I would rather spend my life with.” Check out their full “how we met” story here.
After selling their famous “House On Winchester,” Deb and Danelle moved into a rental, flipped a camper, and decided to eventually move onto a piece of land that has been in Deb’s family for years. However, thanks to COVID-19 and the rising cost of lumber, building their dream home was pushed to the wayside.
Determined to make the best of it, they transformed what was originally supposed to be a barn and workshop into what is now known as “The Woods And Ivy Cottage.” Complete with a charming, retro-farmhouse bathroom, this stunning space reinvents rustic style.
Flippers, designers, and Airbnb super hosts Tim and Chris of Resist The Boring prove that being proud of your identity and your interior design skills can start right in your own backyard. After moving from Arkansas back home to Cincinnati, OH, and purchasing a multi-family home, the duo discovered they had a knack for renovating. Since then, they share their passion with their day jobs as a radio host and fundraising expert, restoring once-neglected homes and bringing them back to their full glory.
When it comes to their design approach, Tim and Chris say they like to leave room for buyers’ own personal touches. The two start with neutral tones and layer conversation-starting accents for effect.
"We give our buyers a foundation to build upon to really make the space feel like home where they can express themselves, be themselves, and be loved by their family and friends for who they are. And that's what Pride is all about."
-Resist The Boring
In addition to “The Coney Island Cottage,” Tim and Chris recently designed and renovated a gorgeous Airbnb dubbed “The Steeple View.” The space lives up to its name, complete with lovely church views on every floor and a clean, contemporary ambiance throughout.
In this blue and gray kitchen, counter space is aplenty and matching hardware, fixtures, and appliances tie the whole space together. Perfect for entertaining, this refreshing spot makes cooking meals away from home feel natural and inviting.
Like many new homeowners, Zach and Hugh began their passion for renovation over the beginning of quarantine. In 2019, Hugh bought their home and turned it into a vintage haven where he and Zach could remain close to the city, spend time with their pets, and raise chickens in the backyard.
So what exactly is a “Yunky” house? Located in the Monayuck neighborhood in Philadelphia, this area was once home to a working-class population who called themselves “Yunkers.” Zach and Hugh wanted to pay homage to the space’s 150-year-old history, so thus, This Yunky House was born.
Hugh, known as the “man with a plan,” does a lot of the DIY work himself, while Zach manages the blog, ensuring it is a creative outlet where they can inspire followers with similar interests and design tastes. In their style, the pair have noted that they prioritize timelessness. In their third-floor primary bathroom, for example, Zach and Hugh went for a Victorian-meets-Colonial vibe, complete with a thrifted gallery wall, vintage-inspired fixtures, exposed beams, and a vibrant color palette.
California designer and lifestyle blogger Shavonda Gardner describes her style as “eclectic with a distinct global influence.” After trading in her large builder-grade home for a quaint bungalow in 2014, she has become known for turning small spaces into tactful yet vibrant works of art. However, her approach to interior design isn’t the only thing that’s bold and beautiful.
Inspiring in more ways than one, Shavonda uses her platform on her blog, Instagram, and other social media channels to speak out against inequality. She frequently supports creators of color, shares anecdotes about being a mother, and celebrates her marriage to her wife of 10 years.
Rich and bold in her style, one of Shavonda’s latest projects was her own home, dubbed “The Cottage Bungalow.” When she decided to downsize by 1,200 square feet, her plan emphasized packing a lot of style into small spaces.
Her kitchen, for example, is an excellent representation of her home’s look. Complete with wine-toned cabinets and appliances, brass touches, and clever storage solutions, this kitchen catapults you into Shavonda’s creative vision.
Austin and Alex of Hommeboys are two architecturally savvy designers who met while attending Evergreen State College in Washington. Since then, they have dabbled in co-running an organic farm, making custom furniture, building and designing full-fledged homes, gutting a 1972 Airstream Ambassador, and many other impressive endeavors.
Career aside, the pair got married during Pride Month of 2019, and last year, they shared an ode to their fellow community on their anniversary:
"We should all be PROUD of who we are, no one should ever have to hide under the veil of inequality and hate. We are here to learn, unlearn, relearn and grow. We all can, that’s how we change this world. It starts with you and me, let’s make change"
-Hommeboys
Back in 2019, Austin and Alex turned the One Room Challenge into a Three Room Challenge. However, their final reveals were anything but monotonous and dull. A trifecta of fun and vibrant design, their master bathroom, bedroom, and entryway radiate personality at every corner.
In this bright, boho bathroom, we love how the trough sink’s Carrara marble adds a seamless buffer between the blue Moroccan Zellige tile and stark white fixtures. Check out their full One Room Challenge tour here.
Stephen and David of Renovation Husbands first met in 2008. After sharing a few apartments, the duo bought and sold several houses before moving into their dream home in Boston, now dubbed “The Lindsay Station.” Today, their blog follows their renovation progress and even shares some of their favorite tools and inspirations with fellow DIYers.
On top of their passion for restoring old Victorian homes, the pair enjoy beekeeping, traveling, and their dogs Gemma and Dexter.
Stephen and David purchased their gutted and abandoned home in 2017. After falling head over heels for its Victorian exterior, the pair knew they had to reflect that same classic beauty indoors.
Among the spaces they renovated, this dining room fully encapsulates the warm, old-world charm of a traditional Bostonian home. In this cozy nook, it’s easy to envision yourself staring out the window, watching the historic Dorchester neighborhood go by.
