Before diving into the installation process, read the entire installation instructions first and observe all local building and safety codes.
These instructions assume you're replacing an existing register with a new one, whether it's for the floor or wall. We'll cover the specifics of each type of register as we move through the guide.
Tools and Materials
Phillips Screwdriver
Drill
Hammer
STEP 1
Replacing floor vents is a straightforward process, simply use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the register in place and carefully remove the system.
STEP 2
The louver frame will fit into the air duct opening while the lip of the register will sit on top of the floor. Typically, it is not necessary to secure the register to the floor to install floor register.
Position the flush mount frame over the duct opening allowing even spacing on all four sides.
Drill a pilot hole inside the recessed area of the frame at an angle down into the sub-floor.
STEP 3
Carefully making sure that the frame has not shifted, use finishing nails to attach the register to the sub-floor.
STEP 4
Cut and fit your 3/4" wood flooring flush to all sides of the frame.
STEP 5
Insert vent cover into the frame. Similar to the floor mount register, it is not necessary to secure it to the floor.
If the existing register is screwed to the wall use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the register in place.
To install wall register, mount it using tension-fitting with spring clips or by securing with screws in the front lip.
The louver frame will typically fit into the air duct opening, and the lip around the frame will rest on the surface of the floor or wall.
Flush-mount floor registers are designed differently. They'll fit completely within the floor opening, with no lip to rest on the surface.
While there’s no firm distance requirement to place a register, 4 to 6 inches is usually the recommended distance.
Typically, most registers will range anywhere from 2.25”x10” up to 8”x14” but, make sure to measure the duct opening to find the right register for you.
When installing floor vents make sure you have 6 to 12 inches of clearance in all directions to ensure proper ventilation.
Certainly, however there are a few things to keep in mind such as capacity limitations and ensuring the installation is done correctly to minimize strain on your HVAC system.
